Eat to Beat Disease by Dr. William. Li: Book Review
Eat to Beat Disease is not just a book about food and nutrition, it is a book about how our society can heal itself and reduce unnecessary suffering and death due to what we eat.
It is a must read for anyone with chronic health conditions, suffering from a terminal disease, that is a parent, a child of aging parents, a spouse, a teacher…pretty much anyone who is concerned with the health and wellness of another person.
“We are truly at a turning point in the fight against disease. Each of us has an enormous opportunity to take charge of our lives using food to transform our health.
You can make decisions about what to eat and drink based on scientific evidence gleaned from testing foods with the same systems and methods that have been used to discover and develop drugs.
The data generated when we studied food like medicine clearly show that food can influence our health in specific and beneficial ways.”

Summary of Book
Eat to Beat Disease is a resource that teaches us that the foods we eat can heal our bodies and prevent disease.
Our bodies are made up of five defense systems that when working in harmony can prevent life threatening diseases such as Cancer, Diabetes, Heart & Stroke and Autoimmune Disorders & even go as far as reversing them once they have taken hold.
Dr. Li explains Angiogenesis, Regeneration, Microbiome, DNA Protection & Immunity (the 5 defense systems) in a way that you start to understand how they function, how they help the body and how they work together.
He also goes into depth about the foods that are best to boost these systems. He lets you know how much you need to consume to see the benefits, which are the superfoods and which foods support each of the systems.
Eat to Beat Disease also gives inspirational examples of people who have overcome disease and illness from following the guidelines in this book.
The book also explains how the “medical field is limited by their education, training and the prohibitive costs of a lot of the life saving drugs & treatments”.
That statement reinforces that you should take your health into your own hands.
Eating to beat disease is all about preventative care.
It is easier to create an environment that disease cannot take hold of, than try and fight it once it has fully moved in. You can do that with food!
The earth has provided us with the best medicine, we just need to take it.
Praise and Critique
I personally found the first section a little tough to get through being unfamiliar with the scientific and medical profession, but I can appreciate that this knowledge will help lead to a better understanding of how our diet affects our health.
I ended up reading the Intro and then skipped Part One and went right to Part Two.
After reading over Part Two, which I impatiently wanted to read the healthy foods list, I then went back and started the book from the beginning again with a highlighter in hand.
I really tried to slow down and comprehend what was behind the science. Once I grasped what was being said I really started rethinking the food choices I was making.
Eat to Beat Disease is very informative and detailed. It is a health and nutrition resource that we should all have on hand.
Dr. Li gives you an extensive scientifically tested foods list and he does a great job teaching you the reasoning behind how those foods benefit your health and what happens in the body eating them regularly.
He also provides some recipes and systems to help introduce more of the foods into your current diet (i.e. the 5x5x5 framework).
You will read through this book and begin to inform every person in your life that if they stop eating “this”… it will improve “that”… and if they eat more of “this”…than “that” will happen. You become a nutrition expert real fast ha ha.
This book offers very useful suggestions of foods to eat more of and which foods to eliminate or avoid (i.e. processed meats and sugars).
Eat to Beat Disease has an easy to follow guide on how to incorporate more of the top foods into your diet so that you can achieve optimum health benefits.
You don’t need to eat them all, but adding a few to each meal throughout your day will alter your diet and overall health.
One thing I loved about the book is that it is loaded with case studies and examples of people eating these super foods and having in some cases miraculous transformations in their health.
My Recommendation.
Anyone can read this book and make improvements in their life right away.
My number one takeaway from this book is to focus on the body's systems and how they work, not the habit of dieting & nutrition trends.
If you are really aware of what the defense systems do for you, then feeding them the correct foods from the list will automatically improve your eating habits.
My Rating.
I give this book a 4 out of 5.
I loved it and it's no-nonsense…to the point… this is what will happen if you continue to eat the way you are, attitude.
It doesn’t just tell you what to eat or not, it gives you real concrete reasons why you should…energy, longevity and good health.
I would have scored this book a 5 out of 5, but like I mentioned I had a harder time with Part One (it was no fault of the author, just my high school biology teachers ha ha).
Don’t be shy to share the knowledge you have gained from this book with everyone, receptive or not.
You never know whose life can be changed from the information in this book.
