How To Transform Your Life With A Vision Board

“The likelihood of hitting your target increases drastically when you are aiming at it”…unknown

You can go through life with no vision board…but wouldn’t it be so much more interesting and rewarding to live with a clear purpose and achieve all of your life dreams?

The Art of the Transformational Vision Board.

Ahhh...vision boards and brainstorming; two of my favourite activities.

I like to pride myself on my collection of both of these…to some it may look like madness (primarily to my wonderfully understanding husband) but to me it is a very clear picture of the life I am aiming for.

I know what activities I want to be doing daily, where I will be living, who the people are that are surrounding me and the feeling that I wake up with every day.

Yes my boards are that detailed. My vision boards represent my future life and the person I will evolve to be.

Knowing what life you foresee makes it so much easier to attain the dream.

The Transformational Vision Board is a very clear and detailed roadmap for me to follow to guarantee I achieve my goals.

There is more to it than just posting images of places I want to visit, words that inspire me and uplifting quotes…I take transforming my life very seriously and it is reflected in my vision boards.

So what exactly is a Transformational Vision Board?

A transformational vision board is a collage that can be created as a poster, scrapbook, journal or screen saver that will serve as a daily reminder to you of your life dreams, aspirations and goals.

It contains images and words of all the areas of your life that you want to improve or transform.

It gives you visual triggers to help you imagine & feel the life you want and it becomes a form of motivation to get you moving towards your goals.

It will be a roadmap of the steps to take to achieve each goal; it will give you a boost when you are feeling down and be a daily reminder of the greatness that is just around the corner for you.

It builds an excitement for your life and shines a light on what is next to come on your journey.

How is it different than other vision boards?

If you google vision boards you will get a stream of boards that are full of inspirational words and quotes, are loaded with pretty images and showcase aspirational goals.

They look great and can be a lot of fun to make. They serve a purpose for people who want to highlight their dreams and gain inspiration.

Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with creating a standard vison board. I spent most of my life making this type and had great fun doing so. I even achieved a bunch of my goals that I had on them throughout the years.

However, the standard vision board will get you standard results.

You may achieve a few of your goals or dreams and build on your goal setting skills, but this type of vision board lacks the follow through component.

There are no intentional action plans to make the goals/dreams reality.

People talk about manifesting their dreams…envision it and it will happen, but I think the part that a lot of people miss out on is the action part.

You need to take concreate actionable steps for any real change. So that is why my vision boards have evolved to be what they are now.

Transformational!

You will achieve your real life changing goals and be accountable to the steps required to follow through.

The Transformational Vision Board is much more than “wishing” for your dreams to come true, it is about actionable goals.

Why do you need a Transformational Vision Board?

Imagine that you are going on vacation. The most important detail is…where you are going. Right?

What is your destination? If you don’t know where you are going how can you pack for the trip, determine how long you need to travel and which map you will need to get there?

THAT is the importance of a vision board...knowing where you are going in life, what skills or tools you will need to gather to get there and the steps you will need to take to achieve your goals.

A vision board saves you wasted time and energy; two things that you can never get back.

With one look at your board you know what your priorities are, the next steps you need to take towards your goals and you can make major life decisions easier and with more confidence knowing they are in line with your dreams.

It creates a compass for you to look at and gauge whether you are moving in the right direction or if you need to recalibrate and alter your course.

Vision boards are great decision making tools and invaluable life planners.

So how do you create a Vision Board?

First we need to decide on a few details.

There are different styles, formats and uses for vision boards.

We need to determine your purpose for making one.

We are going to apply the same principles to each type to create an actionable transformational vision board no matter the style you choose and format that you like the best.

Please don’t become overwhelmed with this step. It is simple, but important to have a clear vision.

Format (personal preference)

  • Poster

  • Scrapbook

  • Bullet Journal

  • Digital

 Styles

  • Monthly Goals

  • Yearly Goals

  • 5 year Goals

Steps

  1. Reflect

The first step in creating a transformational vision board is to first take a moment and really reflect on the life you want.

The main categories to strive for, and please add some if there are important ones missing for you, lifestyle (how you spend your day, where you live etc.), career/purpose, relationships, health, finances and fun.

Write down what you want to have, experience, do, who the people around you are and how you feel.

After you have brain dumped everything, it is time to refine it a little.

Now go back over what you have and list 3 ways that you will take action now to move towards achieving your goals.

Obviously there is much more work in getting from A to B, but if you consistently put your focus on these 3 areas you will be propelled closer to your goal every day.

When brain dumping try and hit all of the categories so that you will have a holistic balance in your life. If you neglect one area the others will suffer i.e. if you don’t work on your health, you may lack the energy required to keep up starting the pizza business.

Do not become overwhelmed by this thought of having action steps for every goal, some will have more of your attention than others at different stages in your journey, but remember the key to achieving your goals is working towards them.

Every detail of it. Dream big and don’t hold back out of fear it can’t happen.

Dump all of your ideas on a sheet of paper. If it helps put the categories down on the paper one in each corner and then shoot all your ideas out of those boxes.

Be detailed here, we will hone it in a little in the next step.

Group things together that make sense to pair up, i.e. you may have making $100,000 a year and starting a business selling pizza in two different categories, but chances are that making money will be a direct result of your business. So instead you will have making $100,000 a year selling pizzas in my business as your new statement in your career/purpose bubble.

Go through and pair up what you can.

Back to the same example, you can have learn to make the best tasting pizza around, source a kitchen/restaurant to make my pizzas and develop a method to get my pizza to the hungry crowds.

If you don’t put in the work you will not get the reward.

  2. Collect

Find images, quotes or words that represent your goals. You can gather them from magazines, online image searches, draw and write your own or buy a predesigned vision board kit/template.

  3. Design

Before making anything permanent be sure to play around with your arrangement to see how things will fit on your board. It is best to arrange your board by categories such as, lifestyle, career/purpose, relationships, health, finances and fun. Make sure to leave room to fit in a few lines for the 3 action steps to work towards the achievement of each goal.

  4. Arrange

Once you are confident with your design and layout commit to it. Cut, paste (drag and drop, if digital) and add some titles if you would like. This is the time to jazz it up and have some fun with it.

  5. Admire

Take time to absorb what you made and all that is important in your life. Keep it visible by hanging it up on your wall or fridge, if it is a journal or scrapbook leave it out on your coffee table and if digital put it on your laptop/phone as your screen saver. Don’t let your dreams be “out of sight, out of mind”; keep your vision board visible and always easily accessible.

  6. Take Action

Be sure to look at your vision board regularly and act on your goals every day for a minimum of 20 minutes. Constant action propels you towards the goal being achieved.

  7. Review

Come back periodically and review your vision board. Ensure that your goals are the same; the actions you have been taking are helpful and revise any steps if you need to. Nothing is set in stone just because it is on the board. Be adaptable when it comes to your vision, things change in life on a constant basis and you need to be flexible. Plan to review every few months.
